Portion Cups are made of 100% Japanese matcha and green tea extract from Uji, Kyoto. As Portion Cups come in liquid form, we are required by food authorities of Japan and other countries (US, EU, etc.) to add other natural and permitted ingredients for the following reasons: To be able to make Portion Cups in large industrial quantities, which allow us to give our customers a competitive price. To give Portion Cups a shelf life that allows our customers to stock inventory for at least a year in a stable and safe condition even at room temperature. To maintain a stable taste, texture and color during the entire shelf life of the product in addition to, obviously, the safety of the product. For these reasons, authorities allow and require us to add natural sugar and non-sugar sweeteners in addition to flavoring (to maintain and enhance taste during longer periods of time), thickening (for texture) and coloring ingredients. All the ingredients were vetted and permitted by the Japanese Ministry of Health and equivalent bodies in Europe and the USA.

The additives in Portion Cups are crucial for a high-quality, convenient, and stable product during a shelf life of at least one year at room temperature. Some are used to create a smooth, creamy texture and to prevent the matcha powder from clumping, ensuring that every sip is consistent. Others are carefully blended to enhance and stabilize the authentic matcha flavor. A final type of additive is used to maintain the vibrant green color, which would otherwise fade during production and shelf life. Without these ingredients, the product would be difficult to manufacture, resulting in poor solubility, an unappealing look, and an inconsistent taste and texture. Each additive is a carefully chosen component to ensure the best possible experience for our customers.

While we understand this preference, a sugar-free matcha product in concentrated liquid form would not be technically practical. Main reason is because it compromises the product’s taste quality during the required shelf life. Removing sugar results in issues such as poor dispersion of the matcha powder and significant loss of flavor, making production and marketing of the product unviable. The current sugar content represents the optimal balance for achieving and maintaining the overall quality and stability of the product.

While we understand this preference, removing the colorant would make the product visually unappealing especially considering that we need to maintain the stability of Portion Cups for at least a year in shelf conditions. This would result in a product that is impractical from a marketing point of view. During the process of dissolving Uij Matcha into a liquid, some natural discoloration inevitably occurs. A minimal amount of coloring is added to ensure the original beautiful green color of Matcha is consistently maintained for a visually appealing experience during its shelf life.

Some are natural, some are a combination between natural and artificial. For Portion Cups, we ensure that our ingredients, including additives, meet strict quality standards and function to deliver the best product experience. All additives are allowed in positive lists of Japan, United States and Europe, classified with the corresponding E-Numbers. Our aim is to create a delicious and stable product, using ingredients that are safe and effective, and where possible, rooted in natural sources.

The formula for Portion Cups is the result of long-term trial and error and meticulous calculation. After extensive research and countless iterations, we arrived at this precise and unchangeable blend to achieve a perfect balance of flavor, texture, and stability. Altering any part of this carefully engineered concentrated drink would compromise the product’s quality and stability. Therefore, we do not encourage nor recommend any change in the formulation. However, we encourage you to express your creativity in how you enjoy Portion Cups. By mixing it with various liquids like milk or sparkling water, or adding your own preferred ingredients like honey or syrup, you can still craft a beverage that is uniquely yours.
